By 1886 Knoxville was a railroad and industrial town in East Tennessee, and its mills, shops, and quarries drew workers in from the surrounding hills. The East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad kept repair shops and freight yards in the city, and iron furnaces and nearby mineral works shipped their output along the same lines. The 1882 Knoxville International Exposition had recently drawn visitors and investment, and local boosters talked of the city as the commercial center of the upper South. Knoxville College, founded in 1875 to educate freedmen, was one of the institutions shaping the city's schools and social life, while the streets below were still filling with new brick commercial blocks and homes.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Knoxville, Tennessee, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
