Here, five leaders of the House and Senate appear as children on an Easter egg hunt, under the title "Informal recess." The cartoonist's joke rests on the idea that Congress had paused its business for the holiday, even as the United States was fighting World War II. Sam Rayburn, John McCormack, Joseph Martin, Alben Barkley, and Charles McNary were among the lawmakers who guided legislation in those years. Wartime cartoons like this one often used such light scenes to comment on the gap between political routine and the larger national crisis.
