Naugatuck, Connecticut, in 1877 was a mill village strung along the Naugatuck River in the valley west of Waterbury. Its economy rested on rubber manufacturing, which had grown up along the river's water power after Charles Goodyear's vulcanizing process spread through the valley, and the works turned out footwear and rubber goods that shipped across the country. Brass and other metal shops and the rail line running down the valley toward New Haven tied the town to larger markets, and mill housing drew workers and their families from Ireland, England, and Eastern Europe. The map's street-by-street view shows the factory buildings, dams, and rail lines that people in 1877 would have recognized as the town's livelihood.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Naugatuck, Connecticut, drawn in 1877. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
