Stenciled across these crates is the name Green Brae Orchard and the community of Ashburn, Ontario, a small rural settlement in southern Ontario. Wooden fruit crates like these were the everyday containers of the orchard trade, and an owner's mark let a grower tell his stock apart as it moved by rail and truck to packing houses and city markets. Such marks also helped return crates that often travelled far from home. The picture shows how a farm's identity was carried on ordinary packing gear rather than on any label meant for shoppers.
