Cigar box labels like this one, showing a cowboy beside a campfire under the words "Round Up," were printed in large numbers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when lithography had become cheap enough for small tobacco makers to decorate every box they shipped. The "round up" was the spring and fall gathering of cattle across the open range, when crews of riders worked herds together for branding and sorting, and the campfire scene drew on that camp life. Labels of this kind were meant to catch the eye of a shopper choosing a cigar, so the bold lettering and rustic scene carried a sense of outdoor manliness that tobacco advertisers often used. Collectors today value them as small works of commercial printing and as a record of how the cowboy was packaged for consumers.
