The caption names only a man surnamed O'Brien and Harvard, with no first name, date, or occasion, so the picture has to be read through its setting. Harvard, in Cambridge across the Charles River from Boston, is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and a frequent subject for newspaper photographers in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, made many such views on glass negatives, and the collection preserves them as a record of how the press covered campus life and public figures of that era. Because this negative is undated, its exact moment remains uncertain.
