A single apple, shown alone on the sheet, sets this image apart from the many crowded orchard and crate scenes on the board. Images like this one belong to a long tradition of fruit-label art, when growers printed bright chromolithographs to pasted onto wooden shipping crates in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Rail lines carried apples from western orchards to eastern cities, and the labels helped buyers recognize a grower's brand at a glance. Pictures built around one piece of fruit trade detail for a clean, bold design that still reads well today.
