Despite the "antique photo print" label, this is a woodblock print, not a photograph, and the record's 1750 date places it in the middle of Japan's Edo period. Ukiyo-e, which translates roughly as "pictures of the floating world," was a popular urban art of the era, with artists producing images of actors, courtesans, travelers, and city life for a broad audience. Around this time, printmakers often worked in limited colors, so the most useful things to look for are the crisp black outlines cut into the block and the ways color was applied by hand or with a few printed tones.
