Marjorie Gateson was an American stage and screen actress, and this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection is one of many portraits the Bain News Service produced of performers and public figures in the early twentieth century. The Bain agency, founded in New York, supplied newspapers with news photographs and posed studio images that were quickly captioned and sent out for publication. The title here comes from the agency's own caption cards and has not been independently verified, so the exact date and circumstances of the sitting are unrecorded. Tennis was a fashionable subject for society and theatrical portraits of the period, and such images often show sporting dress of the day.
