Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1899 was a commuter city in Union County, where merchants and professionals rode the rail lines to jobs in New York and Newark and came home to large houses on shaded streets. The city had been incorporated in 1869 after decades as a village settled partly by Quakers, and that background still shaped many of its civic habits and its reputation for orderly, unhurried living. Churches, schools, and shops lined the main thoroughfares, and the railroad stations drew a steady flow of travelers each day. Local residents at the turn of the century knew Plainfield as a well-kept suburb that had grown quickly once the railroad made it practical to live there and work elsewhere.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Plainfield, New Jersey, drawn in 1899. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
