Paris, the seat of Bourbon County in the Kentucky Bluegrass, looked much as it does in this 1870 view when Reconstruction was reshaping life across the state. Its economy rested on tobacco, hemp, and livestock raised on the surrounding farms, and the rail line that ran through town by the late 1860s linked local growers to wider markets to the north and east. Courthouse business, church congregations, and the lawyers and merchants around the public square made Paris the center of county affairs. Freed African Americans were building their own churches, schools, and neighborhoods in the years after emancipation, and the town's streets carried both the old social order and its unsettled successor. Residents in 1870 would have known Paris as a farm trading town with a famous horse-breeding region at its doorstep.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Paris, Kentucky, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
