Hyndman, a borough in Bedford County in south-central Pennsylvania, sat in the Allegheny ridges near the Maryland line in 1906. Its fortunes followed the timber, coal and railroad trade that shaped much of the region in those years, when rail lines carried ore, coal and lumber out of the mountains. Residents of the day would have known the town as a small mountain community tied to those industries and to the commerce moving along the nearby rail corridors toward Cumberland, Maryland. The view captures a town still growing into its place in that economy, with its streets, churches and commercial blocks laid out below the ridges.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Hyndman, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1906. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
