Tris Speaker, the Boston outfielder and future Hall of Famer, is shown at the plate in this picture, which places him in a ballpark rather than a studio or posed setting. Speaker played most of his career in Boston, where he was one of the best hitters and center fielders of the 1910s and early 1920s, helping the Red Sox win championships in 1912 and 1915 and later spending years with the Cleveland club. Early baseball photographs like this one are valuable because they capture players mid-action at the ballparks of the time, when cameras were bulky and action shots were far less common than portraits.
