Here, fairies and elves share a single title, a pairing that reflects how loosely the two were once used in European folklore, where both were supernatural beings of woods, meadows, and hearths rather than figures from church teaching. Pictures of these small, winged or gauzy-clad folk became especially popular in Britain during the 19th century, when artists such as Richard Doyle and Joseph Noel Paton made them a favorite subject for book illustration and painting. Filed under religious subjects beside angels, the picture reflects how Victorian audiences often placed fairy lore in the same spiritual territory as guardian angels, even though the two traditions remained distinct.
