Beloit, Wisconsin, sat on the Rock River near the Illinois state line in 1890, and its growth rested on the river's water power and on the railroads that ran through town. Mills, foundries, and machine shops clustered along the river, and the community's manufacturing base drew workers and families who filled the streets and new neighborhoods. Beloit College, founded in 1846, gave the town an educated presence and a campus that residents took pride in. This bird's-eye view captures the town at a moment when its factories and rail lines were central to daily life, and when local people would have recognized the streets, churches, and public buildings as the core of their community.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Beloit, Wisconsin, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
