Danbury, Connecticut, in 1884 was still a town whose livelihood rested on hats, with its felt and fur shops spread along the streams that powered them. Hatters bought rabbit and other pelts from dealers across the country and sent finished goods to wholesale houses in New York and elsewhere, so the town's fortunes rose and fell with national demand for headwear. Away from the workshops, residents gathered each autumn at the Danbury Fair, the agricultural exhibition that drew farmers, merchants, and families from throughout western Connecticut and southern New York State. The mills and streets on this view show a community whose factory bells set the daily schedule and whose annual fair offered a brief break from it.
