Four men gather around a stove inside Edd Hull's general store at Armathwaite, Tennessee, which sets this picture apart from other store scenes on the board. The photograph dates from about 1942, when the Office of War Information carried on the rural documentary work begun under the Farm Security Administration and sent photographers into small towns and farm country. In such stores, the stove was often the center of conversation during cold months, and the shop doubled as a meeting place. The record's names and date are unverified, so confirm them against other sources before relying on them.
