Denison, Texas, in 1891 was a town of wholesale houses, dry goods stores, and hardware dealers serving the farms of Grayson County and the trade moving across the Red River. The opening of Oklahoma lands in 1889 sent settlers and freight streaming westward, and merchants in Denison supplied many of them with goods and credit. Across the state line, the Choctaw and Chickasaw nations drew traders who came to buy and sell, which kept the town's stores and hotels busy. Farmers in the surrounding countryside were also turning toward the Farmers' Alliance and the early Populist movement, and local debates over cotton prices and debt were a common topic at courthouse gatherings in Sherman and Denison alike.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Denison, Texas, drawn in 1891. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
