The record names Henry Mather Lewis as the subject, though the Library of Congress notes that this title comes from unverified data on the original negatives or caption cards, so the identification should be read with some caution. The picture survives as a glass negative no larger than 5 by 7 inches, one of the small-format plates that the Bain News Service produced in large numbers. George Grantham Bain founded that service, and his collection gathers news photographs of people and events from the early twentieth century, when quick, inexpensive pictures for newspapers were in demand. Glass plates like this one are worth noticing because they preserve fine tonal detail, and many of them were later printed from in ways the original photographers never anticipated.
