A first-floor plan records the main level of a library in a single drawn sheet, showing where reading rooms, stacks, desks and stairways were meant to sit. Drawings like this were usually prepared by architects to guide construction and to help building committees approve a design. Study the placement of the stairs and the service desk, which show how staff were expected to watch over patrons and move books through the building. Because plans like this often outlast the buildings they describe, they remain useful to researchers tracing how libraries were organized.
