Its record dates it to 1750 and files it under Japanese fine prints, but it names no particular scene, artist, or publisher, so its form tells us the most. Ukiyo-e, meaning "pictures of the floating world," were woodblock prints made in Edo-period Japan, where a carver cut a separate block for each color and a printer pressed paper onto inked blocks by hand. These inexpensive prints showed actors, courtesans, landscapes, and everyday urban life, and images from around this date were often printed in only a few colors. Despite the archive's label, this is a woodblock print, not a photograph.
