Turrets and a central tower rise above the street front of this stone civic building, a design that signals permanence and public purpose. Stone library buildings with this kind of castle-like massing were common in American towns in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when Romanesque Revival and related styles were popular for civic architecture. Many such libraries were funded by donors such as Andrew Carnegie, who paid for hundreds of buildings across the country. The street-level view shows how the building was meant to dominate its block and to be seen as a community landmark.
