Here a covered bridge spans the Monongahela at Brownsville, a river town in Fayette County where steamboat traffic and the National Road's wagon trade both converged. Steamboats and covered crossings were common together on Pennsylvania rivers, so the subject pairs the river trade with the bridge that carried overland travelers across it. Wooden covered bridges sheltered their decks from weather and were familiar features of river towns in the decades around 1900, when rail and early motor traffic were changing how people got across. The print belongs to the Wittemann Collection, which preserves many photographs from this period.
