In 1894, Port Huron was a river town at the southern end of the St. Clair River, where Lake Huron drains toward Detroit. Its economy had shifted from the lumber trade of earlier decades to shipping, rail, and manufacturing, including the Port Huron Engine and Thresher Company, which built steam engines and threshing machines for farms across the Midwest. The Grand Trunk Railway's St. Clair Tunnel, opened in 1891, linked the town by rail under the river to Sarnia, Ontario, so freight and passengers now moved beneath the water rather than by ferry alone. The national Panic of 1893 had slowed hiring and construction, and residents of a town like this one would have measured the year by mill schedules, boat traffic, and the steady arrival of trains.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Port Huron, Michigan, drawn in 1894. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
