Few details survive about the sitter here beyond his curly hair, which the photographer rendered with surprising softness for an 1844 plate. Daguerreotypes of this period were made on silvered copper sheets, exposed for minutes at a time, so subjects had to hold still while the image formed in the mirror-like surface. Because the image sits on polished metal, its tones shift with the angle of light, and this one shows the sharp, mirrored clarity that made the process so striking to viewers at the time. Early portraits like this one offer a direct look at how ordinary people chose to present themselves in the first years of photography.
