Irene Castle, the dancer and fashion figure who partnered with her husband Vernon Castle on the American stage in the 1910s, is the subject here, photographed with a pet dog. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made up of glass negatives from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of celebrities, public figures and current events in the early twentieth century. Castle was a style setter whose bobbed hair and streamlined dresses influenced fashion during those years. The record gives no firm date, so the exact moment is uncertain, but the glass plate itself is a useful reminder of how press photographs were made then.
