A sitter whose name has been lost, and a picture that survives only as a copy, is the particular feature of this one. The daguerreotype was the first commercially successful photographic process, announced in Paris in 1839, and by 1850 studios across the United States and Europe were turning out small mirror-bright plates of ordinary people. Those plates were fragile, easily tarnished and hard to reproduce, so later copies like this one were often made to preserve or share a likeness. Looking closely, the viewer is seeing a photograph of a photograph, a reminder of how these early images passed from hand to hand.
