Fort Collins in 1899 was the seat of Larimer County, and the Colorado Agricultural College, which the territorial legislature had chartered in 1870 and which opened its doors in 1879, had become the town's most visible institution. Students and faculty shared the streets with merchants, ranchers and railroad workers, and the college's work on irrigation and crop science tied the campus to the farms that ringed the town. Colorado had been a state since 1876, and local people measured progress by new brick storefronts, church spires and the steady work of the irrigation ditches that kept the surrounding fields productive. The town saw itself as an agricultural center, and its residents would have known it as a college town set in the foothills along the Cache la Poudre.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Fort Collins, Colorado, drawn in 1899. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
