This glass negative is catalogued under the title "Crn. Prince of Germany and wife," a caption that Bain News Service applied to the negative or its caption card, and the Library of Congress notes that the identification is unverified. If the title holds, the sitters would be Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, eldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II, and his wife, Duchess Cecilie. The couple were frequently photographed in the years before World War I, when royal portraits circulated widely in newspapers. Bain's New York agency supplied press pictures of that kind, so the photograph likely served the same purpose. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion remains uncertain.
