Kokomo, Indiana, in 1868 was a young town in Howard County, still taking shape after the Civil War and growing around the railroad that ran through it. The Atlantic and Great Western line had reached the area in the mid-1860s, and it brought the grain, livestock, and lumber trade that drew farmers and merchants into the town's shops and streets. Kokomo took its name from a Miami chief, a fact that townspeople of the period would have carried as part of their local identity. Much of the town's later reputation, including its natural gas boom and its manufacturing, still lay decades ahead in 1868.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Kokomo, Indiana, drawn in 1868. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
