A glass negative titled "Signs, Tammany" points to the Tammany Society or Tammany Hall, the Democratic political organization that dominated New York City politics for much of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its headquarters stood on East 14th Street in Manhattan for decades, and signage at its meeting places and campaign events was a familiar sight in the city. The record gives no date, and the Bain News Service supplied this title without verification, so the exact location and occasion remain uncertain. The Bain Collection as a whole, however, documents New York street life and public events from the early 1900s onward.
