Fresno, California, in 1901 was a young agricultural town in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley. The Southern Pacific line reached it in 1872, and its depot and freight yards carried grain, fruit, and wine grapes to markets across the state and beyond. Canals drawing water from the region's rivers had turned much of the valley floor into orchards and vineyards, and the raisin trade was becoming the town's signature business. Residents would have known Fresno as the hub of that valley commerce, where the railroad, the packing houses, and the county courthouse shaped daily life.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Fresno, California, drawn in 1901. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
