Elizabeth Woodward and E.T. Potterson operate a sorting machine in this August 1932 photograph, taken at a federal agency in Washington, D.C., where automobile travel was being analyzed with tabulating equipment. Underwood & Underwood, a commercial news photography firm, made the picture, and its caption card tags it under women's employment as well as statistics. Government statistical work expanded in the early 1930s as agencies used mechanical tabulation to study road use and the growing car culture, and office jobs like this one were among the few open to women in federal service at the time.
