Last Horse" is a c1899 print from a photographer named Heyn, catalogued as number 412, and its caption card links it to the Sioux (Lakota and Dakota peoples) and to Bureau of Indian Affairs records. Those notes are old and unverified, so the sitter's identity and the setting remain uncertain. By 1899, Plains peoples had been confined to reservations for years, and the decades after the 1890 Wounded Knee killings brought heavy government control over Native life. Studio portraits from this period often served commercial sale and ethnographic cataloging at once, so the picture reflects both how its maker saw the subject and how institutions later filed it.
